Supporting the elderly

Supporting the elderly

Community investment is an important part of how we do business. We invest to improve the lives of people in the communities where we operate.

We focus on supporting adults who are marginalized in society, including the elderly. In Korea, we are improving the lives of elderly people by helping them live an independent life and providing them with an opportunity to demonstrate their creative capabilities. Our partnerships with welfare centers allow senior citizens to engage in cultural activities, and interact with the younger generation – fostering respect and understanding between generations and giving everyone fresh perspectives.

A cut above

In 2012, we introduced a program entitled ‘Talented Director of the Year’ which supports films directed by seniors and aims to nurture the talents of elderly people who are interested in film production. Talented director Yang-soo Jeon, 66 from Gwangju/Jeolla nam-do, was our first winner. He received a special plaque and director’s chair, while his winning film ‘Mommy’s Ring’ was shown at the Seoul Senior Film Festival in 2013 to an audience of 3,300 people. JTI employees enjoyed a private screening of his directorial debut at our offices.

I am experiencing phase two of the best days of my life by becoming a film director. I will focus on facilitating harmony among generations through films.

A partner to the community

In partnership with senior welfare institutions, JTI organizes other programs to support the senior generation, including the JTI Elderly Literary Award, the donation of a mobile counselling center, the establishment of a digital cinema and support for an art gallery. Our support for senior welfare activities has been widely recognized, and we have received awards from the Seoul Welfare Center and Korean Association of Community Senior Clubs.
